There are two types of energy recovery systems: heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) and energy recovery (or enthalpy recovery) ventilators (ERVs).

Both types of equipment consist of a heat exchanger core, one or more fans that push air through the machine, and some controls. The main difference between them is how the heat exchanger core works. With an ERV, the heat exchanger transfers a certain amount of water vapor along with the heat,

whereas an HRV transfers only the heat. The country or region you live in will determine which type of equipment is right for your needs.

In general, HRVs are recommended for cooler climates with a longer heating season, while ERVs are used in warmer and more humid climates with a longer cooling season.
