Everyone knows that formaldehyde has a strong pungent smell, so many people think that there is no smell in the room because there is no formaldehyde. But in fact, when formaldehyde exceeds the standard by less than 3 times, there is no pungent smell. Therefore, we still need to make professional and meticulous measurements to determine whether indoor formaldehyde exceeds the safe value.

How much formaldehyde is considered excessive?

Currently, China has two indoor formaldehyde standard range values, one is the "Indoor Air Quality Standard" (GB/T18883-2002), and the other is the "Code for Control of Indoor Environmental Pollution in Civil Construction Engineering" (GB 50325-2010).

The former stipulates that the formaldehyde standard shall not be higher than 0.1 mg/m³. The test requirements for this data are that doors and windows need to be closed 12 hours before the test, all cabinet drawers need to be opened, and the temperature is best controlled at around 23°C. This standard applies to housing. It is the minimum standard for a healthy living environment and the basis for measuring whether a house is environmentally friendly.

The latter stipulates that the formaldehyde standard shall not be higher than 0.08 mg/m³. This data must be sealed for 1 hour before testing. This standard applies to Class I civil construction projects (residential buildings, hospitals, elderly buildings, kindergartens, school classrooms, etc.).

Family residences can be occupied if the formaldehyde content does not exceed 0.1mg/m³. This is the minimum standard for the health of the living environment and is aimed at ordinary healthy adults. For sensitive groups such as pregnant women, children, the elderly, and people with respiratory diseases, their immunity is low, they are more susceptible to the harm of formaldehyde, and they have higher requirements for the indoor environment. If they move into a new house, it is best to have a low formaldehyde concentration. Less than 0.08 mg/m³, the lower the better.

So how to remove indoor formaldehyde?

In order to remove indoor formaldehyde, everyone can say that they use "unexpected tricks". Some use green plants, some use activated carbon, some use windows for ventilation, some use air purifiers, and even use vinegar to fumigate, put onions, grapefruit peels, and some Candles and other "home remedies". Some of these methods for removing formaldehyde are effective, some are ineffective, and some are harmful.

The safest way is to install a ventilation system. It can forcefully send filtered fresh air from the outside when the windows are closed, and squeeze out the dirty air in the room to complete the replacement of outdoor and indoor air. Through continuous ventilation, the indoor dirty air containing formaldehyde and other pollutant gases is continuously discharged to the outside world, so that the indoor formaldehyde concentration becomes lower and lower, falling below the safe value, so that we can move into a new house with confidence.
